Sanibel
What is a hippocampus? A mythical creature of the sea? No, hippocampus comes from the Ancient Greek word hippókampos. Hippo means horse and kámpos means sea monster or sea animal. You likely call a hippocampus a seahorse.
Sanibel the Hippocampus is a beautiful Carousel figure that gleams like the ocean on a sunny day. One of its donors, Elizabeth, loves finding seashells on Sanibel Island, Florida, where she has spent many winters. The carvers added the giant scallop shell to the saddle and other seashells on Sanibel’s flank to remind us of the wonders of the ocean. See how many seashells you can count.
Then, let your imagination take you deep into the waters, swimming among schools of colorful fish and dancing over the coral. Will you be a mermaid? A merman? An oceanographer saving our precious oceans for generations of seahorses to come? Let Sanibel show the way.
